More Birkenstockhistory: 1947 The specialist book "Podiatry the
Carl Birkenstock System" is published with a print run of
14,000 copies. With a total of 112 pages and 55 illustrations,
Carl expounds his theories of the natural gait, the so-called
footprint system, and healthy shoes. It becomes the bestselling
textbook on podiatry of its day. 1954 Karl, son of Carl,
joins the family business. 1966 Work on the self-coloring
footprint paper is successfully completed, making it much
easier for shops to sell their Birkenstock sandals
beyond the city limits. The process is patented in Germany,
the US and most European countries. 1969 Birko-Cork, a material
which becomes malleable when warmed, is developed for orthopedic
use. Birko-Cork is first used on the cork-leather footbed
